Preview: The Growlers at Emo's in Austin, TX on 2.25.2017

The Growlers at Bonnaroo 2015 by Randy Cremean

words by Connor Marshall

With 6 albums under their belt, The Growlers continue to develop their brand with progression in style and presentation seen in 2016's City Club. In 2006, the mystique of Beach Goth came about in Southern California, a reverb-coated musical blend of rockabilly and surf rock, while touching on traditional American folk with a unique approach to rhythm and blues. The Growlers were at the forefront of this movement, releasing Are You in or Out in 2009. Brooks Nielsen's signature edgy and slightly off tune voice combined with Matt Taylor's loose guitar rhythms give their debut release a haunting, swinging fluidity. 2010's Hot Tropics furthered their looseness, the focus on capturing the breezy and open style of life and music in their native Orange County.

By the time of their 2013 release Hung At Heart, The Growlers cemented a nationwide following and fascination, a musical style, and a mysterious vibe in their music and personalities that became infectious. Gilded Pleasures, released later in 2013, saw an ample embrace of pop, while holding true to their relaxed, easy surf rock roots. Their signature style, Beach Goth, grew with popularity by the month throughout 2013-2014, with a multiplicity of groups and changes in style hitting the national music scene. The Growler's fifth release, Chinese Fountain, in 2014 gave listeners a well-oiled balance of sloppy rockabilly and tight pop/rock. Now, over a decade after their formation, The Growlers have embodied a Euro-pop approach to their beats and and melodies while their SoCal roots serve as the foundation. Last year's City Club epitomizes The Growlers' ability to stay ahead of the music scene, dictating the sounds and attitudes of future music.

The Growlers will be at Emo's Austin this Saturday, 2/25, for a SOLD OUT show in support of last September's City Club.
